If you invest on online properties, it is important that you also invest on securing them. Blogs are a typical example of online investments that are constantly at risk from being attacked by hackers. Certainly, we don’t want our blogs to be taken down, destroyed, torn and obliterated from the Blogosphere. Hence, the need for precautionary measures.

The unfortunate truth is that a lot of bloggers, especially the newbies, are clueless of the simple things that can be done to protect their blog from hackers. Here are four powerful tips that will help protect your blog from hackers.

1. Update Your Softwares And Scripts

Whether you are using WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, or any other blogging platforms, make sure they are updated to the latest version. Nearly all updates made on these blogging platforms contain security patches that covers a known security vulnerability. Therefore, using an old or outdated version of any of these platforms allow hackers to easily target the lose end of these softwares allowing them access to the protected information of your blog. The most cases of blog hacking is attributed not to an exploited server but to a lose software or script.

2. Secure Your Passwords

Your blog can easily be hacked if you’re using a poorly generated password. Using your name, your initial or your birthday is not really a good practice when you are making a secured password. It is highly encouraged that you use alpha-numeric and special characters when generating a password. Passwords are suppose to be case sensitive so make use of upper and lower case. In no occasion should you use your name, nick name or anything obvious that can easily be guessed by a hacker. But of course, in your effort to make a secured password, make sure you take note of it so you won’t forget and keep it on a secured place. As much as possible, you should never share your password to anyone.

Some bloggers use the same password for all their accounts for convenience but this is a risky practice as you only increase your blog’s vulnerability to being hacked. Vary your passwords.

3. Keep Your Computer Clean

Is your computer clean from any viruses or malwares? If you’ve been doing a lot of net surfing without a decent and trusted anti-virus or a firewall installed in your computer, it possible that your PC is already infected by malicious scripts, viruses or malwares that automatically fetches sensitive information on your computer or information you use online.

Securing your PC doesn’t have to be very expensive. There are a lot of free anti-virus offered online but be wary of your choices. Avast and AVG are two of the most reputable anti-virus with free editions. It is not enough however to have an firewall or anti-virus working on your computer. You should keep them updated as well. Download the latest virus definitions or if you can’t do it manually, most anti-virus allows you to schedule automatic updates all you need is a connection of the internet.

4. Back-up Your Files

The worst case scenario is getting hacked and losing all your files and that you have no back up whatsoever. While some hosting companies keep a back-up of all your files, most do not. Just to make sure you can get your blog up and running in minutes after it has been taken down by hackers, keep a back up file. This may take some of your time but this is a good practice, especially if you’re trying to secure your online properties.
