Indirect Search Engine Traffic

by BloggingSetup on February 25, 2010

The truth is, if your blog is new, traffic from search engines hardly come by. Your blog will not receive traffic from search engines for a certain period of time until the search engines crawl and index pages of your blog. And even if your blog is indexed by search engines, you still need to compete with other blogs and websites in terms of ranking in the search engine result page. In other words… search engine optimization requires a lot of time, energy and resources. Fortunately, you can drive traffic to your blog from search engines indirectly and you don’t need to spend so much time to accomplish this!

Search engines vary in their ranking systems. Google for instance rely on a combination of factors like page rank, inbound links, title tags, age of site etc. to identify the rank of pages in their search result. If your blog is new, Google will most certainly not rank your blog on top of their search result page. The key to indirect search engine traffic is to utilize websites and blogs that are already ranked high on Google search result page and drive their traffic to your blog.

Blogcatalog and DigitalPoint Forum are my favorite sources of indirect search engine traffic. They not only rank high on search engines but new pages created on these websites appear on search engine result pages in less than 24 hours. Here are some useful tips you might want to consider to drive more indirect search engine traffic to your blog:

  • Create useful tips and information then share them on websites/forums that rank high on search engines. (e.g. Blogcatalog, DP Forum, Bloggeries Forum etc.). Make sure you browse their TOS before you start posting your tips.
  • Also, make use of your signature whenever possible. It’s even better if the website allows you to link to your website directly from the thread/page you’re creating.
  • When creating pages on forums, use targeted keywords. Optimize your thread by using tags when the forum lets you do so (e.g. threads created at Blogcatalog).
  • Search your tageted keywords using Google. If the pages that appears on top of the search results are forums or blogs, make an effort to leave your comments on them. Link to your blog from these pages only when it complies to their TOS.

When you’re done implementing these tips to your blog, let me know of the results. Or if you have other suggestions you want other readers to know, feel free to share them in the comment.

Thank you for your time.

This really works, indeed. In fact, I’m using this technique sometimes if I found relevant contents in the forum. This is very tiring though, especially if you don’t have account on a particular forum.

I wouldn’t recommend confining yourself to just forums. I’ve had great success using BlogCatalog, Newvine and BX-Businessweek. You should try them too.
