by BloggingSetup on January 16, 2010

The internet giant Google said on Thursday that it will donate one million US dollar to aid the relief efforts in earthquake stricken Haiti. The poor Caribbean nation was struck on Tuesday by a 7.0 magnitude temblor that devastated the entire country and put over 2 million Haitians homeless.

Google’s donation is expected to finance the food supply of the victims, water, shelter and medicines that are urgently needed. Google also setup a web page devoted to linking people with charitable groups including Direct Relief, Yele Haiti, the Red Cross, and Doctors Without Borders. This effort aims to increase awareness and hopefully accumulate more financial aids and reliefs.

Furthermore, Google is also making online mapping and satellite imagery tools available to relief workers so they can better evaluate damage and coordinate responses. The same imagery tools are expected to aid relief workers identify locations that need utmost attention and help.

In a blog post, Jacquelline Fuller and Prem Ramaswami of the Google Crisis Response Team said they’ve also reached out to the YouTube community for help! Meanwhile, Oxfam and Red Cross videos are spotlighted on the YouTube home page along with links for donating to Haiti relief efforts.
